new leaf beads

Witnessing Native American artwork since childhood left an indelible mark in my spirit.
Desert vistas with the vibrant colors of Arizona and the use of simple materials develop into works of beauty that still inspire my mind today Along the way I met some of the most beautiful people with skills I only could hope for. They made pottery, baskets, breath taking paintings, blankets and jewelry.
To those I met in my early life I want to thank for their kindness and patience of my incessant staring and questions.

NEW DIRECTION

My beading practice had taken place off and on throughout my life. After a serious car accident in 2021 being hit head –on that left me with 8 broken bones, punctured lung and painful bruising and with over 2 years of recovery. I was so frustrated by not being able to work for so long and then not being able to secure a job, I picked up my passion once again. Then I had to ask myself what am I going to do with all this stuff I have made? And how will I survive?
Unfortunately, in Texas persons that carry only liability insurance does not cover even the medical expenses, loss of income, or let alone the still suffering from residual physical problems. Despite all that productivity is still a priority for me.

BEADING THERAPY

Combining color and texture can be sensual that brings out calm and patience that promotes beauty to be worn or displayed. Being creative can be primal and a necessity to feel satisfied with oneself. Representing the aesthetic values of not just culture, but also the creator as art.
Dating back thousands of years in many cultures in prehistory. In Native American history beadwork expresses particular tribes. Color and design tell the story of the person who owned and wore the item. The works told their story and the individuals’ accomplishments. Many items used in ceremonial practices are still in use today.
Whether using a loom to weave threads and beads together or different stitches in off loom work. Beads are embroidered and added to leatherwork. There are also the simple stringing techniques with a variety of stitchwork.
Some people gamble, smoke, drink alcohol or worse. My vise is to buy beads. 50% off at Hobby Lobby or Michaels is great fun! I also think it’s great that bead supply websites have wish lists. I feel like a little kid in a candy store.
My mind is constantly putting pieces together in my head. There are other times it’s just an experiment where I weave a little or almost finish not being satisfied and take it apart to rework it. Often multiple times until the work looks or lays right. Beaders are their own worst critics expecting perfection in their work.
